How to Self-Publish an eBook

In this episode I take you through why you might want to self-publish an eBook first in most cases.

I also take you through the ways you can create an eBook via using a tool like Scrivener or via Word.

Scrivener is the tool I use and is a fantastic tool for planning and organising writing as well as for generating ePubs.

Buy Scrivener for Windows (Regular Licence)
Buy Scrivener 2 for Mac OS X (Regular Licence)

The e-book by Jay Thorn that I mention about creating an epub file from a Word document is Formatting for Kindle

I also recommend Draft2Digital for producing an epub from a word document. I will come back to Draft2Digital in a later show though, as it is a great way for publishing to non-Amazon eBook stores.

If you want to pay a professional then I’d suggest looking at the resources of the Alliance of Independent Authors. For any author services they are good place to go for advice.

A great set of applications for PC and Mac that Amazon provides are KindleGen and Kindle Previewer

Kindlegen will take an epub file and produce a .mobi file out of it. This file can then be previewed in the Kindle Previewer, which will show what it looks like on a selection of Amazon Kindle devices and on the iPhone/iPad Kindle apps.

Later in the episode I take you through how to release an eBook file onto the Amazon store using the Kindle Direct Publishing Service (kdp).

I’ve created a video tutorial about how to use the KDP interface here.
